Video Downloader Plus works as a Reddit video downloader that handles Reddit’s unusual video delivery format automatically. Reddit hosts its own video using DASH-style delivery where audio and video are sent as separate streams — a quirk that causes the “no audio” problem many users run into. Video Downloader Plus detects both streams and combines them into a single file with audio included.

How Video Downloader Plus detects Reddit videos

Reddit-hosted video (v.redd.it) uses DASH-style delivery: the video track and audio track are served as separate files from Reddit’s CDN. Your browser downloads both and plays them in sync. When you play a Reddit video, Video Downloader Plus’s network monitoring captures both the video stream and the audio stream as they load. Video Downloader Plus then automatically combines (muxes) them into a single output file, so the download you get has audio — no manual merging needed.
This auto-muxing behavior applies to Reddit-hosted videos (v.redd.it). Videos embedded from other platforms (YouTube, Streamable, Imgur) are detected through their own respective format and do not need muxing.

How to download a Reddit video

Open Reddit on desktop

Go to reddit.com or old.reddit.com in Chrome. Video Downloader Plus works on both the new Reddit interface and old Reddit.

Navigate to the post

Find the Reddit post containing the video. Click on the post to open it if you are browsing a feed.

Play the video

Click play on the Reddit video player. This triggers both the video and audio stream requests that Video Downloader Plus needs to detect.

Click the Video Downloader Plus icon

Once both streams are detected, the Video Downloader Plus icon in your toolbar lights up. Click it to open the download panel. You will see the detected video with audio included in the output.

Select quality and download

Choose your preferred quality and click Download. Video Downloader Plus downloads and combines both streams automatically.

Tips for downloading Reddit videos

  • Play the video first — Both the video and audio tracks are only fetched when the video plays. Press play before clicking the Video Downloader Plus icon.
  • Audio is handled automatically — You do not need to do anything special for audio. Video Downloader Plus detects both tracks and combines them. The “Reddit video has no audio” issue that affects other tools does not apply when using Video Downloader Plus.
  • Old Reddit and new Reddit both work — Video Downloader Plus detects v.redd.it streams regardless of which Reddit interface you use. old.reddit.com, new Reddit, and Reddit’s redesigned interface all serve the same underlying streams.
  • Embedded videos from other platforms — If a Reddit post embeds a YouTube video, Streamable clip, or other hosted video, Video Downloader Plus detects those through their own streaming format. They appear in the popup alongside any Reddit-hosted content.
  • GIFs posted to Reddit — Reddit converts GIFs to silent MP4 files when they are uploaded. Video Downloader Plus detects these as video streams. There is no audio track to add since GIFs are inherently silent.
If only the video stream is detected and not the audio, refresh the page and replay the video from the start. Both streams need to load for Video Downloader Plus to combine them correctly.
