Video Downloader Plus is a free video downloader extension for Chrome that detects HLS, DASH, and direct MP4 streams as you browse — no paste-and-download, no site restrictions. Install takes under a minute.

Add Video Downloader Plus from the Chrome Web Store

Video Downloader Plus v4.0 is published on the Chrome Web Store and installs directly into Chrome, Edge, and Brave.
1

Open the Chrome Web Store listing

Go to the Video Downloader Plus extension page in your browser. Brave users can use the same link — Brave accepts Chrome Web Store extensions natively. Edge users can use the Chrome Web Store link or install from the native Edge Add-ons store — both work equally well.
2

Add to your browser

Click the Add to Chrome button (Edge shows Get, Brave shows Add to Brave) in the upper-right corner of the listing page.
3

Accept the permission request

A dialog lists the permissions Video Downloader Plus needs. Click Add extension to confirm. For details on what each permission does, see Extension permissions.
4

Start detecting streams

Video Downloader Plus is installed. The icon will appear in your browser’s extension area. Head to any video-hosting site and the icon will update as streams are detected. We recommend pinning Video Downloader Plus to your toolbar so the detection indicator is always visible.

System requirements

  • Operating system: macOS, Windows, or Linux
  • Browser version: Chrome 88 or later, Edge 88 or later, Brave 1.20 or later
  • Internet connection: Required during installation and for stream detection on certain sites

Privacy and data handling

Video Downloader Plus monitors network traffic locally inside your browser to detect video streams by inspecting response headers and URLs. Page URLs may be sent to Video Downloader Plus servers for fallback detection on sites where network interception alone is insufficient to identify streams. No account or login is required to use the extension. Extension code runs under a strict Content Security Policy (script-src 'self'; object-src 'self'), which prevents injection of third-party scripts.

Configure the extension

After adding Video Downloader Plus, open its options page by right-clicking the toolbar icon and selecting Options. The settings available include:
  • Format filtering — Select which video and audio container formats to track (MP4, WebM, MKV, TS, and more)
  • Minimum file size — Set a threshold to skip small files that are typically ads or UI elements (10 KB, 100 KB, 1 MB, 2 MB, or a custom value)
  • Download management — Let Video Downloader Plus use the browser download API for proper file naming and folder routing
  • Download path — Specify a subfolder prefix within your browser’s download directory
  • Chromecast — Enable or disable the Cast button for detected streams
  • Badge mode — Switch between a video count badge or a simple dot indicator on the toolbar icon
  • Theme — Choose light, dark, or system (follows your OS preference), synced across browser profiles where you are signed into the same account
  • Blocked sites — Exclude specific domains from all stream detection
The best video downloader extension for Chrome is the one that stays out of your way — Video Downloader Plus’s detection runs silently in the background and only surfaces when streams are found.

Keeping Video Downloader Plus up to date

Chrome, Edge, and Brave manage extension updates automatically. Video Downloader Plus updates install in the background without any action on your part. To check which version is currently installed:
  1. Right-click the Video Downloader Plus icon in your toolbar
  2. Select Manage extension
  3. The version number appears on the extension detail page
If the icon is not visible in your toolbar, see Pin Video Downloader Plus to your toolbar.
